Medical Exemption Certificates (Medex)

Medical Exemption

People with certain medical conditions can get free NHS prescriptions if:
  • they have one of the conditions listed below; and
  • they hold a valid Medical Exemption Certificate.
Medical Exemption Certificates are issued on application to people who have:
  • A permanent fistula (for example caecostomy, colostomy, laryngostomy or ileostomy) requiring continuous surgical dressing or requiring an appliance
  • A form of hypoadrenalism (for example Addison's disease) for which specific substitution therapy is essential
  • Diabetes insipidus or other forms of hypopituitarism
  • Diabetes mellitus, except where treatment is by diet alone
  • Hypoparathyroidism
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Myxoedema (that is, hypothyroidism requiring thyroid hormone replacement)
  • Epilepsy requiring continuous anticonvulsive therapy
  • A continuing physical disability which means the person cannot go out without the help of another person. Temporary disabilities do not count even if they last for several months
Or are undergoing treatment for cancer:
  • including the effects of cancer; or
  • the effects of current or previous cancer treatment

  • I assume emlou, was putting 'it' up for specific medical conditions, I'm sure emlou knows the HC1 / HC2 / HC3 has been around for nigh on 30 or more years .. .. :D

    - in that case there may be many [STRIKE]thousands of[/STRIKE] others who don't know about the HC2
    - so maybe worth pointing out again its a huge, huge big benefit to those in need

    - if in doubt .. .. .. apply, it costs nothing other than a yard of Biro ink and a second class stamp

I have Type 1 Diabetes and so get the exemption card, yet I get reminders. Maybe the business unit of the NHS has messed up slightly on either of ours?

I got a reminder a few weeks ago that my exemption cert. was due to run out in Jan, I just ticked the box, signed it and posted it back, last week a new exemption card arrived in the post which is valid for another few years.

It's always been like this, all my adult life
