can anyone shed light on what happens to any property or part of a property occupied by a sitting tenant on the death of that sitting tenant?

inform next of kin? or the police?;)

Generally the tenancy is concluded and the property reverts to the landlord. There are circumstances when the tenancy automatically passes on to another family member. From memory, it can only happen if it is a relative and they have been living in the property for a certain length of time. There may be further restrictions in that the tenant acquiring the rights might have had to be caring for, or a dependant of, the tenant who has passed away.

In terms of rent, I would guess that the landlord would have a right to rent until the property is vacated by the tenant's family etc. You may need to claim this from the tenants estate.

As the body decomposes I'd imagine it would probably be soiled with bodily fluids and start to smell a bit off.

cant we just sweep it all under the carpet?

thankfully, there is no dead tenant. miss marple and poirot can stand down. its just a general question as a friend is inheriting a building with a sitting tenant. I kind of suspected it would revert back to the landlord esp if there is no other relative/carer at the property.
