Thanks texranger however my point was that I did not want to set up emails when web hosting arranged but prior if possible ie when domain name established so that I could be sure of getting email address without a website - is this possible by using a domain name registration company?0

To get e-mail services, you need to sign up to a hosting package, even if it's just Domain Parking with e-mail. If you Google 'Domain Parking with Email' you'll find quite a few providers, but tbh I'd suggest you work out what you want to achieve from your domain-name/site and work from there0

I know exactly what I require from my website however it will entail taking photographs/interviewing people outside of this country so before I fly off I want to establish the name/website address/business cards/letterheadings/email address so that I can advise people/firms when I visit them and tell them their pic etc will be on the new website launched on ...... say March 1st 2012. Thank you (daveys) for your continued help and advise. I have now found a firm - actually called freeparking who (it seems) give unlimited/linked email addresses + registration however I can see another problem > this firm also offer a free 4 page web site (called whizz or something similar) which people will be directed to when going to my website. On March 1st how do I stop people going to this very basic website in order that they go to my super new (web hosted) new (with pics etc) website? In the past I have just thrown money at these things and it has been a waste plus I have not really understood the process - I just want to understand it all and set it up myself so there is only one person to blame!0

most domain registrars will of email services as an addon like 123-reg charge 99p a month https://www.123-reg.co.uk/email-hosting/
but best register a domain and then get a basic hosting package ( you can get them from 99p a month) just use as email and then you can always upgrade your hosting package when you are ready to set up your site. this way it gives you a chance to test the host out in relation to support requests etc.0 -

If I get a basic hosting package with my domain name registration/email address is it possible/easy to switch the hosting package to another firm whilst retaining the domain name retention with the original supplier?0 -

Yes, although it's always best to hold domain & hosting separately.
Alot of web hosting companies include email for free, you shouldn't have to pay for it.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0 -

get your domain with a registrar like 123-reg/fasthost or any other.
once you have this find a host and just link the domain to the hosting plan and yes you can change to another host pretty easily and the domain will still stay with the same registrar0 -
THANKS ALL :T
Went with 123 in the end as this seemed the easiest to understand. Their 2 year .co.uk domain registration via Quidco was excellent value and I'm hoping it all works out ok. From experience the problem comes when firms entice you with low buy in costs then when renewal comes around you are held to ransom - we will see

renewals with 123 is just a matter of clicking a renewal button and paying the same rate.
one thing is for some reason 123 dont accept paypal for renewals0 -
Can't beat 123reg for domain names - and ideally use them to hold your DNS - good choice.
Vidahost are supposed to be a good reliable client - if you are going to use WordPress then be sure to look into or get someone to deploy some security for it as out-of-the-box it's comes with very little. I'd recommend though you get someone who is in the business to knock together a site for you for a few hundred pounds as on the outside WordPress looks simple but when you start to look into the detail behind what can go wrong ... there's a lot that can and will go wrong - even for the experts.
Have used GoodPrint for business cards - there are quite a few vouchers and codes knocking around to get a discount off their inflated 'rrp'.0
