Switching current account whilst being overdrawn!

Hi,
I currently have a student account open with RBS and I am over £1000 overdrawn in this account. After some bad experiences with them I am hoping to switch to another student account.
I am just wondering if it is possible to do this while I am overdrawn in RBS account? I was hoping to open new student account pay off the RBS overdraft with the overdraft facility in new account then close the RBS account.
Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated
