high electricity bills
im at my wits end here with my ever increasing electricity bill. i am with NIE (Nr Ireland Electricity) and had a card meter installed when i moved 12 years ago. My average electricity costs are between £9 and £11 per day - yes PER DAY!! My daughter uses about £15 a week. Granted she has a smaller house but she still cooks with an electric cooker, uses the washing machine and tumble dryer at least once a day and has electric heating where i have oil. I have rang NIE on numerous occasions but they seem uninterested insisting that there could be no way their meter is faulty. I would gladly pay for them to check the meter but they just wont do it. I am thinking of changing my electricity supplier to Airtricity but have been putting it off as I dont know anyone else who is with them and they might be no better than NIE. Any advice would be appreciated.

I suggest there are several things you need to do:
1) I assume these are a PPM meter so you need to ensure there is no debt on the debt.
2) Turn everything off for an hour and check the meter reading has not changed.
3) If you have something like an elec fire that uses say 2kwh turn this on a check the meter records correctly.
4) Check there is nothing like an immersion heater that has been left on 24/7

I'm not 100% sure about NI regulations but in the rest of UK that would be a totally negligent and incompetent response ripe for a formal complaint.
Before you go further you must start thinking in terms of your daily consumption in kWhrs rather than ££s. If you do not know how to interrogate your meter ask your supplier. Then check how many kWhrs you use daily and what rates are set into the meter.
Post again for more help when you have that information.0
