Madrid for a day and half.

Hello all,

I'm going to Madrid very early on Saturday and leave on the Sunday late in the evening. Im staying at the Catalonia Gran Via (near the Gran Via metro stop).

Can anyone recommend some nice areas close by to check out whilst there? Maybe where theres some nice restaurants/bars etc.

Thanks :D

That's a good area for a hotel as it's right next to the Metro and is within walking distance of most of the city centre. There's a pedestrianised street which goes from the Gran Via Metro to Puerta del Sol and from there you are very close to the main bar and restaurant areas off Calle Mayor and Plaza Mayor.

Madrid is a great city for just wandering around and following your nose. The city centre isn't huge but it's easy to get lost in all of the back streets - but if you keep bar & tapas hopping you'll eventually come back to somewhere familiar.

I recommend Plaza Santa Ana. It's walkable from your hotel and has a much nicer atmosphere and nicer bars/restaurants than Placa Major.

We were there a few years ago and headed back there every night.

If you Google it on Google maps you will find it's about a 15 minute walk from your hotel at the most.

Nearest metro is probably Anton Martin but by the time you've got there and walked back you could have walked it all the way.

    Have a good time

I've always visited at least one of the major art galleries when I've been in Madrid, as you'll be there on a Sunday I recommend http://www.museoreinasofia.es/index_en.html as entry is free between 10:00 and 14:30 - make sure that you leave plenty of time for the room containing Picasso's Guernica, if you hang around for a while you should get a decent view even though it'll be busy.
