I get very depressed at Xmas time. I don't really know why but I think it is because of the hassle and the commercialism shoved down one's throat. I'm not religious and certainly not Christian but if I 'celebrated' (I do participate for the sake of my family) anything I'd be more inclined to go for Yule/Winter Solstice and just enjoy some feasting.

  • I see no reason why people who enjoy Xmas should not continue to celebrate it.

The point is, each to their own, rather than being compelled to do anything out of conformity. I have no sympathy for all those people who keep telling me what a chore it is, and how they don't enjoy it, but they keep filling in hundreds of Xmas cards and buying hundreds of prezzies anyway.

Personally, I haven't done anything different for Xmas for over 10 years apart from having to adjust myself to being on holiday for a couple of days along with everyone else which is not a bad thing. The idea that one or two days deserve more attention and should be enjoyed more than al the other days is contrary to all I believe.

The only change I would like to see is to legislate to stop the early Xmas advertising. The supermarkets started advertising on TV at the end of October. That's bad for people, having a 2 month anticipation period diminishes Xmas, the 24th, 25th & 26th, only 3 days, it pressures people to spend too much or get into debt, and draws focus away from people enjoying each and every day before Xmas.

Things like this are a bit silly. You can't 'cancel Christmas' so what's the point in even thinking about it? All cultures have celebrations, it's part of human nature to have festivities, most are in the name of something like religion but, tbh, it doesn't really matter what the reason is; the fact is, humans living in groups will have celebrations. You can't ban human nature.

It's only exciting if you are aged 1 - 9

It's way too comercialised now, too expensive, the plot of christmas is long forgotten.

Price of food shoots up, normal none christmas food too just for a sake of a picture of holly on the container.

my money just covers the heating bills.

I start the ordering of gifts in October and finish by december, last present was delivered yesterday. Thats it no more present buying.

It's my Birthday today, will i get presents...
from OH yes because he has been going on and on about it.
DS because i did actually demand this year, last year i didnt even get a card for birthday or anything at christmas.

But that will be it, it will be lovely, but i do hate this time of year.

  • Unfortunately Christmas has been hijacked by the big retailers inciting us to buy unnecessary goods, usually of dubious Chinese quality, and fuelling debt.

We see more of the same with Fathers Day, Mothers Day etc.

  • Christmas is marvellous - or it was! Let's go back to having telve days from Christmas to Twelfth Night to celebrate ... I am a Christian and Christmas means a lot to me, but I can understand why people of other faiths and no faith at all can be a bit perplexed that we Christians seem to be getting more and more ashamed of our beliefs. So come on, Christians, let's hear it loud and clear ... "Christ is born in Bethlehem!" - and that's something to celebrate. Happy Christ-mas!

But historians/scientists believe that Christ was actually born in July and the only reason December was chosen by the church was to hijack the popular pagan festival of Saturnalia.

So given the 'evidence' it seems it is only a ploy to get people in church (to give money) and into shops (to spend money).
