I'm pretty shocked that people would cancel it for other people. If you don't like it, that's your issue - but why on earth cancel it for other people who enjoy it?
If it's too expensive, you're spending too much money on it. It's not about money and gifts. It's about togetherness and love and, if you're religious, Christ. I understand it is difficult for those who don't have families, friends or suchlike, but that doesn't mean that those who also lack those things don't enjoy it.
How curmudgeonly and mean to cancel it for everyone just because you personally get the hump with it.0 -
I was surprised at the size of the "cancel" vote. Why not just sit back and try to have a good time or enjoy it vicariously through the celebrations of others?
My kids are all grown up and it's made no difference to enjoyment of the festival. You can even wind people up by pretending that you call it "Winterval"Can I help?0 -
Nah... I might postpone it to a time that suits me better... but then that's already what I do
I have 'Christmas Day' with my immediate family sometime in January - this year it's on the 24th. Everything's cheaper then

I agree with this. I find preparing for Christmas a bit stressful (picking out presents people will actually like, travelling to visit family etc) but once the day itself gets here I know I'll enjoy spending the time with my loved ones and indulging in all the family traditions again. Plus I've got small nephews and it would feel awful to take the magic of Christmas away from them - they're only little after all and it hardly does them any harm to believe in Father Christmas and all the rest of it.
That said though I'm much less disillusioned with it since I stopped working in shop jobs and hotels over Christmas, where it was pretty much wall-to-wall festivities from about mid-November onwards. Would you cancel Christmas?
Define Christmas.
Is it still Christmas if you're atheist?
Is it still Christmas if the family get together for a day but don't exchange presents?
Is it still Christmas if you don't get hammered at the Christmas party and become infamous for something that you can't remember doing?
Is it still Christmas if you don't watch the Queen's speech?
Is it still Christmas if you don't have a chimney for Santa to come down?
Is it still Christmas if you don't wear a party hat?
As independent beings, we can choose to act as we please. We don't need a big red button to make Christmas disappear, we can pick and choose what we want to participate in.
I find it hard to understand how anyone would want to "cancel Christmas", yet feel unable to. Don't most people pick and choose the bits they like anyway? Let others celebrate it if they want. I don't hear anyone screaming to ban the Talk Like A Pirate Day (the Pastafarian equivalent of Christmas) and impose that choice on others.0 -

I work in retaill too, half of me says keep it, half says cancel, the extra trade at Christmas is good but I don't feel like celebrating. If you don't like what I say slap me around with a large trout and PM me to tell me why.
If you do like it please hit the thanks button.0 -
I voted to cancel......but MIGHT have voted differently if Xmas actually was just the weekend of the 25th....my problem is that Xmas starts in about August.....the supermarkets have the puddings, snacks, chocs etc on display.....and the last straw this year was when one of my sister in laws proudly announced at a SUMMER barbeque party, that she had done her Xmas shopping...and written her Xmas cards!!! I voted cancel because I'm stressed out of my head with so much to do and several presents still
to buy with no idea what to get.
I end up spending money on overpriced rubbish because I feel I have to.
Neither do I want to cause a family upset by bothering.
I don't go over the top with catering , but it's still more work.
I hate deciding who to send cards to and always seem to forget someone.
But there are some aspects to Christmas i wouldn't want to miss.
Not many though!
Christmas is still exciting for children and i don't want them to miss out on that.0
