Cost of Moving Towel Radiator

Hello,

I wondered if anyone could give me a vague idea of how much it will cost to move a towel radiator before I start getting quotes?

Previous towel rad has been taken out by plumber, pipework still sticking up out of floor. However have new rad that i want moved right along the wall, so the lino/floorboards will have to be taken up and pipes extended along and then new rad installed. Not a huge bathroom atall, but have no idea how much to expect when pipes are involved!

Thanks :-)

Not too sure about labour but two 2m copper pipes will be about £5, other parts shouldnt total much more than £10-15 unless you need rad valves?! Fairly easy DIY job but confidence always an issue with plumbing.

A guesstimate on labour would be about £30 per hour but will depend were you are etc etc. And probably take not much longer than an hour.
  • Really? Wow thats good news, i had a couple hundred quid in my head for some reason?! :-O Waaaaay out clearly!

We currently have a standard radiator in and we're considering putting a towel rad in... is it not possible to simply tap into the pipes that are already sticking out ofthe floor and run some pipe off them? Then you could just box it off!!!

We've just had a non slip flooring put in our wet room, so I dread having to take it up and access the pipes under the floor boards

  • I have had tradesmen quote for jobs recently and what we found was that 75% came in around the same with one way higher and one lower. The lower ones are decent blokes doing good work for reasonable pay. The 75% want the earth for simple work so they can live in big houses and drive fancy cars. They are also reluctant to break down quotes so you can see that a £6.49 copper pipe is being charged out at £45 or something stupid or that they are charging full labour rates to go fetch the parts they need to do the job.

Try Which? local trader (you would have to join but can trial it for £1 for a month) and see what other people say in your area. Forget the web based trader search companies.

Realistically they shouldn't have to go buy any parts. The cost is largely dependent upon how "neat" you want it. Going back under the floor is time consuming and more costly whereas simply running pipework along the skirting is child's play. It could be boxed in easily though.

If a couple of metres then you can get the cost of piping from Wickes, B&Q etc. websites, joints as well, then you just have labour which could be anything from £50 or so for someone charging one hour at a modest rate all the way up to perhaps £250/300 for someone charging well over the odds per hour, adding in a junior helper to watch and eking out the job far longer than is required.

Your best bet is to find out the cost of parts (perhaps £30 unless you want extra control valves) and then you know the rest is labour. Don't be frightened to ask how long and how much per hour. If they won't tell you, simply don't use them.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to live in a big house and drive a fancy car. All you have to do is to decide whether you want your hard earned cash to help them to do it.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
