^ So basically I may as well have sat here and tore up £722. Surely they can change the date to a later time!!! Just a fraction of flexibility would be nice... My advice is never book with Thomas Cook

Actually as all holiday companies have the same booking conditions surely your advice should be "Never book a holiday" or maybe "Check the booking conditions before booking" ?

Absolutely agree with you, but in those times when things change, you have to be the one that takes responsibilty for those changes not the holiday company or any other company for that matter.

Did you book the holiday before arranging time off work? If so whos fault is that ? Not TCs

Sorry but it really isnt down to TC

To me this seems to be the most important point as if you can't get the time off work, then any financial troubles (past or present) are irrelevant...booking a holiday on relatively short notice without having confirmed time off just seems a bit odd...if it is down to your employer approving leave and then withdrawing it, perhaps speak to them about your potential loss and see what they say.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

They are being flexible, they are saying if you cant get the time off we'll allow you to change one of the names so someone else can go instead. Is there anyone else who could take your mum away?

Think yourself lucky you can do a name change so all is not lost, if it was a low cost carrier you could kiss goodbye to even that. January is a pretty quiet time for people to go on holiday, what makes you think in these tough times they would be able to sell it anyone else and let you go at a later date, if the money is no longer the issue then it must be you can't get the time off work, sorry thats not Thomas Cooks fault why should they lose out cause you didn't ask your boss first.
