BT terrible customer service & SRJ bullies

Hi,
I have received about a month ago a nasty letter from SRJ Debt Recoveries claiming that I owe BT £126 in unpaid phone bills. I called them and asked what that's about and they did not have a clue, so I asked them to provide me a copy of the bill.
I have received the BT bill and it dates July 2010. I called BT to get more info since I asked them to cancel my account back in September 2009 after moving out of my flat.
After having called BT customer service several times, and each time spending more than hour on the phone, BT traced back the steps on their systems and identified that I called them back in September 2009 and that call lasted for an hour. They have noted from the call that I have asked them to activate my phone line!! How can I ask them to activate my phone line if my phone line was already active and I wanted to deactivate it???
Anyways, they kept on billing me to an address which I was not living in, for a service that I was not using and that I did not ask for...
BT customer service are completely unhelpful in that matter, they say they have no record that I have asked to cancel my phone line. I have asked them that since they record every call, that they could play again that recording and confirm what was the outcome of the conversation. The customer service operator always said, sure, we'll do and we'll get back to you in a couple of days. They have never done so...
Unfortunately, I do not have a letter from BT proving that they have cancelled my line, since I changed addressed after cancelling my line.
Anyone been in such a sticky situation with BT and with SRJ? Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, SRJ have become really annoying with daily automatic sms messages...
Thanks.
