Can anyone recommend a cookery book?

Hi good folks of MSE I need some help with buying a gift for my BIL and his wifso was wondering if anyone has any ideas of a good book for them.

Their needs for a cookery book are entirely different to ours, they are a 40ish couple, no children and love cooking together. They're not really pudding people, so something with a good selection of starters and mains would be good.

Oh, and it needs to be a reasonable size to post!

Any ideas?

Jamie Oliver? Any of his are quite good.

Do you know if they're into any particular type of food? Like Italian, or fish dishes etc? Rick Stein does good books, mainly fish-based. I've got my Dad the Jamie Oliver Italian book this year.

Or maybe one of Gordon Ramsey's?

Ooh or The Hairy Bikers - love them! :D

How much do you want to spend?

Amazon have a gift wrap option if you found the book you like on there, I think you have to pay a couple of quid for it but unless the book you find is very light, its likely to be cheaper than posting it yourself to them.

Anything by Nigel Slater - his Real Fast Food (paperback) is in danger of falling apart here, and I haven't had it long. Admittedly it's full of recipes that can be made in under 30 mins, but maybe one of his others?

Other than that, what about one of Nigella Lawsons? Not sure how cheap they'd be to post though - perhaps get it from Amazon, get it gift wrapped and sent direct to them?

I was going to suggest sending it direct from Amazon or one of the other book stores online save postage and messing around.

I really like the Jamie Oliver 30 minute meals one

Oooh, thanks for the suggestions, I'll have a look at all of those, on Amazon!

They're meat eaters rather than fish eaters, although a veggie cookbook would go down when MIL goes to stay. Probs want to spend a max of £25.

Have a look at the Book People - they've got loads on there and the prices are generally a bit cheaper too.

It depends how 'foodie' they are but I like Simon Hopkinson's books - or there's a new 'Heston at Home' that they might like? I have a copy of 'The Modern Pantry Cookbook' - that's interesting, quite modern (and £7.99 from the Book People) :), that might be something they'd like if they're into food.
