can anyone advice if these are ok for what we want I like the feel of the acer and have spent hours in pc world checking that the keys etc were comfortable for me.
My daughter on the other hand at 13 just likes the look of the dell. Had her eye on the mac book but bless her realises the family budget just doesnt stretch.
Registered with software 4 students ready to order microsoft 2010
Thank you
Sam

I know what your daughter means, I have a MacBook Pro.
The laptop it replaced was an Acer that lasted 5 years, in fact it still works. I gave it to a friend who replaced Windows XP with Ubuntu Linux and breathed new life into it. My wife has an Acer that is two years old and our youngest went to Uni 4 years ago with an Acer that she used all through her degree and is still using.
We only ever had one problem and that was with my wife's. It was a hard disk failure which Acer replaced under warranty. It went away on the Monday and was back on the Friday, excellent customer service.
I have no experience of Del computers so can not offer an opinion. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
what about this one its a i5 2430 http://www.comet.co.uk/p/Laptops/buy-ASUS-X53E-SX947V-Laptop/764019
also i dont know if this voucher code is stil valid
Use promotion code 5PC to get it at £379 and don't forget Quidco currently at 4.5%
they also do it in pink and red0 -
uni assignments, internet, facebook are minimal requirements, you could spend much less if you wanted (or use what you have)
Dont be fooled by the "save £xxx", they were never worth £800
You could use vouchers and cashback to bring the price down

Based on what you said you needed the laptop for then this one would be worth considering:
edit: I cant post links as i have set up a new account. Look at the Acer 5733 on PC World, it is £379 and a real bargain.
This would be fine for office apps, facebook, internet etc...also the money you save could be used for the usual accessories such as a mouse, case, usb flash drive etc...
I have never had a Dell but I currently own an Acer of almost identical spec to the one I have linked. The keyboard is really good, as is the screen and it generally feels nice and solid. I am very happy with this Acer. Incidentally I gotthis Acer as a replacement for my dilapidated Macbook. I wouldnt be too enamoured with macs, more style over substance in my opinion, and I have had 3 of them. Since windows 7 came out the benefits of having a mac dont exist any longer in my opinion.
Looking at the 2 laptops you kinked then purely based on the specs I would go for the Dell because the extra hard drive space on the Acer woud make little to no difference. Whilst it is good to have more RAM on the Acer im not sure it worth the extra £70.
I wouldnt get too bogged down with specs, just make sure it has an i3 or i5 cpu and at least 4 GB of RAM then find the one you like the look and feel of most.
ps. Stick to a brand and dont be tempted by usually better specced own brand laptops.
Hope this helps mate :j0 -
i agree with the post above and yes that acer is a i3 370 which is 1st generation and good but for the same price you can get that i5 which is 2nd generation i put the link up to0
