Yes i do believe that being a high myop is a disability. Without correction I simply couldnt function. I couldnt work, couldnt drive, couldnt have the life experiences that people take for granted. I couldnt even see a friends face clearly unless they came within 8 inches ! The only thing i can perceive without specs is blurs,light/dark and colour. Without the right appliance, i am the same as an amputee without a prothesis or a deaf person without a hearing aid.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

As a deaf person who is also a myope I find that quite insulting!

I paid privately for hearing aids, £2500 for a pair. My glasses (before discounts - I work in optics) were £149 for zeiss 1.7 glass lenses, my RGP contacts were £90 and my soft lenses are £40 for a 6 month supply. Compared to that I say glasses are bloody cheap considering the sheer a,punt of work it takes to get them right.

Believe me, compared to some of my patients, you are not disabled. If I were you, I'd stop moaning about the hand life has dealt you and play to your own strengths.

I am not sure why you should be insulted...we are both in the same boat.. i.e marginalised by the NHS. I think there should be some help for you in obtaining hearing aids.

I'm not moaning, im quite happy. I am simply contrasting the assistance given by the state via the NHS to some groups and not others.

Disability isnt a bad thing, it just means less able than others. In that respect, optically i am clearly less able than people with normal vision. It doesnt stop me living and indeed, i work and pay lots of money to the state and seem to get almost nothing back.

    My expenditure this very week...

2 x £7.64 for two lots of meds from chemist
£45 to optometrist for CL health check/eye test
Impending huge bill for pair of specs with 1.74 lenses so that i dont look too geeky.

And only as an example i hold up this recent article in the Daily Blahh....

Women forces local NHS to pay for ivf by invoking European Bill of rights..

My monthly NI contribution is about £500 i seem to recall..

If you're definitely myopic and don't mind a bit of weight in your glasses I recommend glass lenses. I found my vision better, they're thinner and cheaper than plastic and I prefer the finish on them.

For what it's worth - I agree that some things can appear most unfair. Unfortunately there'll always be someone who thinks otherwise and they tend to be the ones in the position of power and decision making.

OK Ned..but do you not agree that the fees having to be paid by people who are high myopes are crippling? What can be done about it? With any other health issue they would receive help but with myopia, you are more or less left on your own and fully exposed to market forces. So whats the issue? Is it lens manufacturers eg Pentax et al who are running a cartel and holding prices artificially high or does it really cost more than £100 to produce a pair of single vision high index simple lenses?

If someone has a worn hip/knee,the nhs fixes it. If they cant get prgnant, the nhs will help. If you want breast reduction/fat reduction/tatoo removal/free drug treatment/and a host of other things, the nhs will help. If you are -10 and you wake up almost blind,no one wants to know unless you bug them the fat end of £250

100% agree I am - 27 in both eyes been round most of opticians in Edinburgh I use Daysoft daillies made specially for me by a very kind gentleman who understands my problem the latest optician promised me thinner lenses for £400 tops I agreed he then put it up to £600 when I saw the glasses I could have wept heavy and very thick so shocked I paid by CC checked my CC statement £705 out, thanks to people in here I got the professional body told him I was going to take this further he repaid me.
please do not pick on me for my grammar,I left school at fifteen and worked in the building trade for 55years ,
