Oh Gosh the price of fuel or beer?

Ok I know I am an old geezer with an elephantine memory, but I seem to be constantly wingeing about prices of this and that until I realised that Petrol is cheaper than Beer, but do we complain to our MP about this, no we don't.

So how about a Campaign against inflated Beer prices?

In the early 1970's you could get a nice pint of Whitbread Tankard (hmmmmm) for a half crown (13p to you young ones) and a Gallon of Petrol for..........a half crown (13p to you young ones).

Now here comes the Math. A Gallon of Petrol today at 131.9p per litre is the equivalent of £5.99 (plus 0.6295p). A Gallon of Beer today (depending on where you are in the Country is £24.

So Beer has increased in price over the last 40 years by 400%.

ROBBERY!!

  • If you can remember petrol at half a crown (12.5p) a gallon, then you must be at least 95.

I'm 63 and I can remember it at 5/6d a gallon (27.5p) and that was in 1965. At the same time, a pint of Watneys Red Barrel was 2/- (10p) whilst the pint of normal mild ale was 1/- (5p) in the Justice Birch pub in Manchester. The only place you could get petrol for anywhere near half a crown a gallon in the early 70's was probably in the USA but there it was about 35 cents a gallon if I remember rightly.

  • Can't do too much about the price of petrol seeing as most of it is tax.

Could brew your own beer though.

Either way use as little of either as you can possibly get away with and starve the state of the tax it craves, it's sole purpose is to get ever larger with ever more power and have total control over our lives.

Why did you switch from comparing a pint of beer and a gallon of petrol in the 70s to comparing a gallon of beer and gallon of petrol at current prices?
  • 129.9 a litre at the local Shell today. I'm off to fill up later.
  • Cheapest diesel around here is 137.9 per litre. I filled up from almost empty yesterday in my Mondeo and it cost £87. That's the most I've ever paid for a tankful.

It is only that beer is more affordable now than it has been, not necessarily cheaper. Also, you tend not to buy beer by the gallon (at most a few pints if buying a round) so there is less cash leaving your pocket when buying beer than there is filling your car up with petrol.

  • Was in Saudia Arabia earlier this month, apparently recently the King thought the people were suffering due to global slow down, so decided to make a gesture, so cut the price of fuel in half , so now a litre of petrol is approx 10p and diesel approx 5p.

For the same price of a bottle of water in the restaurant you could get 30 litres of fuel !!

Didn't seem sensible to ask the price of beer !
