Why is it so hard to give away late husband's clothes?

  • I can't suggest any organisation but do sympathise with you not wanting to see them around locally, especially givent he circumstances. My mum used to sell on my childhood clothes to one particular woman and I hated seeing her daughter in a favourite dress I had outgrown

I also get totally p'd off hearing charity shop staff discussing "oh I got a lovely so and so last week, the manager let me have it cheap" as I donate things to get max value for the charity, not a bargain for some of the staff (who also do a regular car boot sale)

When I had to dispose of my late uncle's clothes he had recently bought some new trousers at almost £100 a pair in a posh tailors and had them shortened - he was very round and short and I didn't think they would fit many men but had never been worn - what to do? So I put them on the doorstep of a local man who had recently moved out of an instiitution and wore half mast trousers, in the hope that he'd fit them and they'd suit him. I worked - I saw him wearing them and was happy with that, as it seemed right.

As far as charity shops go, they don't always sell in their own area, it may be worth explaining the situation and asking if they could take them further afield
You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow

Many thanks to everyone who came up with suggestions. I didn't want to appear picky by saying I didn't want them to go to a hospice shop or other charity shop. I just had it in my mind that because I support those charities in other ways then I wanted the clothes to go directly to the people in need of them not be sold off and the money supporting another charity.

Many thanks to Errata for suggesting Crisis at Christmas, which I googled and found Crisis Skylight in Birmingham. My DD has been in touch and they will have everything. They work with homeless and vulnerable adults and as Birmingham is my home town then I'm happy with that. Even if they don't use all the clothes and eventually sell some of them on then at least the money will be put to use within their organisation. She is coming this weekend so we can box everything up and she will deliver them on her way to her Nan's between Christmas and New Year.

My suggestion was just a shot in the dark really, because I didn't know if it would be too late for CatC, so I'm dead chuffed it hit the bullseye.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
