BT, other providers and 'using' 1280

I have been told by BT that the other providers have blocked 1280 so that calls cannot be made through BT. Does anyone know if there is a way round this so that 1280 can be used?

That is not technically true. In fact, it could almost be said it's a quirk of the system which resulted in use of the 1280 prefix being ineffective for some people.

AIUI, BT Wholesale introduced a new calls-carriage product called Wholesale Calls Line Independent (WCLI) - which allows other providers to sell their own calls packages when all they in fact do is send calls via the BT network.

Using Sky as an example, someone on Sky Talk Carrier PreSelect (CPS) - i.e. paying line rental to BT but having their calls routed via Sky - suddenly found their use of the 1280 prefix had no effect because Sky had changed to WCLI and so individual calls could not be diverted onto the BT network because all calls are being carried there anyway.

The same happened with Talk Talk CPS (although I understand some Talk Talk customers were successful in demanding to be put back on CPS) and AOL and probably others I've forgotten or don't know about.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
