One of my daughters friends is gluten free and will be coming to her 9th birthday party next weekend. I would rather all of the children ate the same so am looking for foods that they can all eat, but are not necessarily from the special gluten free range that the supermarkets sell.
So far I have
Cubes of cheese
Carrot, cucumber, baby toms
Grapes and strawberries
I need sausages to cook and cut into chunks, can anyone advise some nice ones. I see Asda do some in their extra special range, anyone know if these are nice?
Crisps, I know some varieties of pringles are ok, but which ones and which other crisps?, maybe some kind of cheesy puffs?
I am going to avoid sandwiches but maybe some gluten free breadsticks if anyone can recommend.
I was also thinking of some kind of chicken skewers, or I suppose chicken nuggets but are the gluten free ones nice?
Any other goodies I haven't thought of? I need sweet things like mini muffins I suppose but these will have to be from the special range so any recommendation?
Lastly, which everyday sweets and choccie bars are ok? I have selection
boxes as party bags so need to get together a special one. I know
haribo, and crunchie are ok but what else?
Any help appreciated please, I want the friend to be totally included and not have to bring her own food, and I also don't want to worry about any cross contamination from non gluten free food.
Thanks lovely people

I think that is really great of you - you can get most things for parties that are suitable for coeliacs. Have you looked at the Coeliac Uk website - they have some recipes on there and also what ingredients you need to look out for on packaging. I would also recommend you look at http://www.coeliackids.co.uk/ and their forum especially as they can point you in the right direction.
I have had a look in the Coeliac Uk Food and Drink Directory and safe crisps are:
Kettle Chips, Co-op Assorted crisps 6 x25g (Cheese & Onion, Ready Salted, Salt & Vinegar) also a lot of their Truly Irresistable flavours, Sainsburys the flavours for the co-op plus Prawn Cocktail and also a lot of their Taste the Difference plus their Cheese Balls, Cheese Puffs, Salt % Vinegar Crunchy Sticks, Potato Squares, Basics Potato rings. Tesco Ready Salted crisps, Sweet Chilli flavours, Sundried Tomato Garlic and Basil flavour
Sweets in the directory
Cadbury (some): Boost, Buttons, Choc Peanuts, Choc Raisans, Chomp, Crunchie, Curly Wurly, Flake, Fudge, twirl
Haribo: Starmix, Kiddies Super Mix, Starmix etc - there are lots listed for Haribo let me know if you want specific ones checked.
Asda and Tesco do breadsticks in their free from ranges
I can also recommend these gluten free brownies: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/brownies_74769

For sausages got to Marks and Spencer they have a really big range of fresh and frozen cocktail sausages.
Most of the supermarkets do savoury snacks that are gf....tesco eastmans cheesey balls, salt and vinegar twists etc. Sainsburys even do a gf version of monster munch.
GF mini pizzas would be easy enough to make (just make a normal pizza dough but sub the flour for dove farm gf).
As for sweet jelly and ice cream is a safe bet. Also the BBc good food magazine for January has some lovely gf cake recipes in....the honey madelines went down really wellin my house and are really easy to make.
If your not already then join coeliac uk, you can then access the food directory online which makes searching for gf products alot easier.0 -
My DS is coeliac - at his party we had mini sausages from M & S, wotsits, chicken drumsticks (the Sainsburys GF chicken nuggets are very nice), oven chips, fruit & veg, popcorn
Not bought his selection box yet but as a general rule the Caburys ones are OKSealed pot challenge 822

If she can have oats, then I can recommend the GF cheesy oatcakes. The GF pastry is quite nice too, if a little crumbly - you could use it to make sausage rolls. The bread is best toasted, but I can recommend making individual garlic breads (or pizza) with the various ciabatta rolls you can buy.0

Oh and the "Good little food company" make delicious GF sausages - you can buy them in Waitrose.0

Be careful with the sausages. If it doesn't say GF check the ingredients as many include cereal.0

If you are thinking of baking your own birthday cake, fairy cakes, or making jam tarts or something I can recommend the Doves Farm gluten free flour - I think that you can get it in both ASDA and TESCO. Just use it as you would normal flour. Just remember to use gluten free baking powder if the recipe calls for additional raising agents (again, available from the supermarket).
Hope your daughter has a fab day!0 -
You've been given some great ideas, but I just wanted to say Thank you to you for going to all this effort.
You will make the guest feel so at home and she will be much less awkward about her dietary requirements.
Well done you! Coeliac and mother of coeliac.0 -
Be very very careful with oats as they do contain gluten.
If you do not have any nut allergies make a flour free cake - Something like this one?

Spend no more than £3 per week on non perishables until the end of Jan 2012.
Week 3, 12 Dec £0 / £3
Week 1 - 2, £2.65 / £6,0 -
Hi
my husband had just been diagnosed as Cealiac, and, like you we are endevouring to find our way through the gluten free maize!
what I can advise is that you join Coeliac uk site as they have a foods directory that lists nearly all foods safe to eat & have sections for supermarket foods.
With regard to crisps we have found that Kettles crisps are fine (albeit expensive as is the case with GF foods!) - we have started to eat Pom-Bear Teddy shaped potatoe snacks (plain or cheese&onion) which are gluten free, taste lovely & cheap!! Sainsburys stock these & so do B&M stores, also have found alot of Aldi foods are gluten free (check the labels)
Hope this was useful for you :T0
