The recommended mix for my car is only good for -15. If this winters anything like last year it may need to be
stronger than that.
No it won't need to be stronger. The average temp of last winter was just minus 1.
Any old anti-freeze will withstand even a harsh UK winter, extreme mixtures (and thus the more expensive) are for north of Scandinavia or Siberia but are marketed here in the UK for mugs who will believe in anything.0 -
You have to get the stuff from the main dealer for your car, you can't just chuck any old stuff in a modern car.
Rubbish, there is no need to get antifreeze from a main dealer for a 107, you can even get it in halfords though I wouldn't myself as it's probably as expensive as the main dealer.0 -
Also, not knowing what oil is in there, should I have that changed? It only has 29,000 on the clock and was serviced at 25,000 so it's not yet really due a service.
!
It all depends.
It may only have 29k on the clock and serviced at 25k but that may have been 5 year ago, if the car wasn't used often.
As it's an 08 plate I'd say your antifreeze is good for up to 5 years.
Myself, I'd always go for an oil change when buying a car but I doubt it's worth changing the antifreeze really.
Cars can quite easily withstand a UK winter.0 -
Best tip is to get yourself a new battery. I fitted a new one couple of months ago for the winter.

The reason I said that is because for many cars you can't just top up with any old antifreeze and IME, its only really main dealers who actually know what the proper stuff you need to put in is. Certainly ask at Halfords and you're likely to be greeted with a blank stare and pointed to a pile of stuff with "Antifreeze" on the label which could be anything.0 -

I guess you know best here.
Didn't you say you used to be a "mechanic" at halfords?Yes you will. And you will get your car seized as well.
Whilst some business insurance use is cheap (I pay nothing), business use for hire and reward is eye wateringly expensive. You are basically in the same category as a courier. BUT some places may have their own insurance which covers you in your car whilst driving for their business - certainly Halfords did when I was a mechanic there and had to go pick up parts.
As regards the tax on a second job, why do people keep posting this nonsense? You pay no more than if you earned the same time as overtime with your main employer.0 -

Average was -1 but last year i had the car running whilst i scraped the side windows and warmed the car up a bit, Sitting in the traffic about 20 minutes later i switch the trip computer to temperature and it was still -9.
Sister said hers read -16 early one morning.
Personally for the sake of a few quid i would rather play it safe.
My washer tank froze solid and that was meant to be good for -6.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
