am I watching HD freesat or not?

I have a KWorld DVB-S100 PCI Freesat card in my computer.

If I use the demo version of ProgDVB 6 I can receive and watch the Freesat HD channels, BBC1 HD, BBC HD, ITV1 HD, etc.

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 2494 HDMI monitor and a NVIDIA 9800GT graphics card connected VIA a DVI-D cable, there is no HDMI output on the graphics card, at a resolution of 1920 by 1080.

However I can't seem to see any difference between the HD channels and the SD channels.

Does this mean I am not viewing an HD picture or am I just too old to see it?

Is my graphics card capable of outputting a HD picture VIA a DVI-D cable or do I need a graphics card with a HDMI output?

ProgDVB is near the end of its demo and reverts to SD unless I buy the program, if I am not actually watching HD then I would just use the SD program that came with my Freesat card.

Unless! I might be able to persuade one of my grandkids to buy me a new graphics card for Christmas, another one a new motherboard and the other a new processor.

Any suggestions?

If your monitor is 24" you won't see much of a difference tbh

You're output is set to the native resolution of your monitor - you can't make it any better than that.

not if you are sat 6 feet away no, but sat right in front you can (like you would for a computer), I can see a quantum leap in picture quality between a playing a bluray and a DVD on my 15" laptop

OP, DVI can easily carry an HD resolution, it will be giving you an HD resolution right now (think of it as HDMI without sound) so that will not be the problem

the problem is that (from google) the KWorld DVB-S100 PCI is not an HD tuner card, therefore no matter what you do you won't be able to get HD out of it, that is why you cannot see the difference between the SD and HD channels.

The only channel you'll be able to watch in HD with that card is ITVHD, but not all content on that channel is HD, to be sure watch X factor on ITVHD, you will notice the difference

Your Satellite card will need to be able to receive DVB-S2 to receive many HD satellite channels including BBC HD and BBC One. If the card is only DVB-S capable then you simply won't be able to receive the channels, you won't see SD versions in their place, you just won't be able to receive or tune them.

As above if it's not an HD tuner on the PCI card, you shouldn't actually be able to see the HD channels at all. Are you sure you're watching HD channels? Everything else between computer and screen sounds fine though.
