Work problems making partner ill

Posts: 13 Forumite
Hi I'm writing on behalf of my partner as he is currently in a very dark place at the moment (not literally lol).
He works for a large national garage and his manager is causing him problems. He has been with the organisation for nearly 10 years and feels he isn't progressing. His centre manager was away on holiday so the supervisor was in charge of putting people forward for courses, to which my partner got put forward for the course due to the supervisor. When the manager found out about this he said 'why've you put him forward for it, he's useless etc'. He's always belittling him in front of others saying his work is rubbish, but fails to mention this in his annual reviews, in fact he says totally different in his reviews.
The way it works is that the manager loses a bit of his monthly bonus if a member of his team gets a pay rise, which is why we think he's so reluctant to send him on courses.
He's always making little digs at him. And on a number of occasions has said 'oh there's a spacca there waiting for tyres to be fitted, it's a job for you! Spacca is short for !!!!!!, in case you did not know, and I find that extremely offensive especially as I'm nearly a qualified learning disability nurse.
WhT options has he got?
Thanks

In fact when he goes and works at different centres for the day the managers always comment on the quality of his work, which is good.0

Start keeping a diary..
The best thing really is to drag the manager into his own office and have it all out in the open.
In low skilled jobs the hard workers are rarely respected as they keep the company afloat while the lazy pee takers get higher up the chain of command due to their ability to stir up dirt for others and side up to the boss. In high skilled places it's supposed to be the other way around - hard workers get to the top but it seems to be going south there too.0 -
What options has he got?
Well, bluntly, he can: put up with it and keep his mouth shut; try to change things where he is; or get another job.
Is this situation new, or has your OH felt belittled by his manager for years? If the situation is new, it might be relatively easy to fix. If it's not new, why is your OH only now bothered about it? (I'm wondering if perhaps it's you annoyed on his behalf).0 -

Or of course, he could do this, which will probably get him fired, if not prosecuted for assault.
To be honest, the best outcome here might be if he could move to another centre - is there any prospect of being able to do so? This would avoid the prospect of what could be an even more difficult situation if he decides to take formal action. Which means making records of his tretament, prefereably with evidence to back it up, and submitting a formal grivevance. Which, although it shouldn't be the case, I can't say I am sanguine about the prospects of success - unfortunayely this can often only make things worse. Bullies of this type don't learn to stop - they learn to be cleverer.0 -
Its not what you want to hear, but people calling people name sfor disablities etc. my advise is 'take him round the back'All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0

I qualified a number of years ago as a Disabilities Nurse and am horrified to hear that someone would talk of someone as being a spacca. I have never heard of that term before but oh my! Realistically though nothing will happen. This has been the way of things for years.0

You must have led a sheltered life then as there was a charity called the !!!!!! Society but changed its name to Scope - presumably because of how the word !!!!!! fell out of accepted use.2014 Target;

I worked in a place a while back where the boss had a name for everyone - even decent nice people.
Sometimes its best just to get out.0 -
I said I'd never heard of the word 'spacca'. Of course I've heard of the word '!!!!!!' as it is a proper word and I know that it became used as a derogatory term.mountainofdebt wrote: »You must have led a sheltered life then as there was a charity called the !!!!!! Reading for understanding not your strong point obviously!0 -

Well I may have misunderstood your original post but my comment still stands - it may not be an acceptable phrase to say but a straw poll (of admitedly one) of a member of the younger population has heard the term and I would imagine that majority of my generation has heard of the term even if they find it unacceptable to use.2014 Target;
