Faulty Car

Hi there,
Some advice would be much appreciated. I think I'm doing the right thing but just want some confirmation on what I'm doing!
Two weeks ago I bought a second hand car which came with a full fresh MOT. Owing to the specialist nature of the car I booked it in straight away with an independent specialist for a full service for peace of mind even though the service history was up to date.
To my horror they discovered numerous faults with the car that shouldn't have passed an MOT inspection but worst of all was a problem with the engine that would cost more than the value of the car to potentially fix.
The independent specialist advised me to reject the car and get my money back as it wasn't road worthy.
I have done this in writing to the garage and they have agreed BUT only if an independent specialist of their choice confirms the issue and that I have to return the car to them for this to be done. They are concerned about my choice of garage making up faults to make money for repairs that aren't necessary.
The garage I've used has not asked to do the repairs as they don't believe it is economically viable for anybody to pay for it and that the car should effectively be written off; so I'm not sure where their concern has come from?
As their findings mean the car can't be legally driven on the road (and any use of the engine would be detrimental to it's already broken state) then any transportation of the car would have to be by tow truck.
1) Do I have to agree to having the car inspected again somewhere else and do I have a say in who that garage is? They could get their mates somewhere to say it's all well and good...
2) Who should be paying for it to be transported to another garage for the inspection? I believe it is them as the burden of proof is on them..
Your opinions would be most gratefully received!
