    thanks for all your views.
we didnt tell the owners or the letting agency that we were looking for property to buy.if the owners had informed us that they were selling, we would have probably considered putting in an offer.not now!!! all it would have taken was a short letter to let us know, not do it the way they have.
since i posted the original post we have viewed 7 houses. we hope to make an offer on a house on monday am after viewing 3 more tomorrow.
the sooner we get out the better, i hope the house sits empty and they are out of pocket. (there is currently 2 houses exactly the same up for sale
and have been for 5 months and what they are asking for it you can buy a brand new house for the same)
    i will never rent again!!!!
    do you think im bitter?

    lol incredibly bitter.

But as I said before, why should they tell you they wanted to end the arrangement? You didnt tell them that you wanted out so why should they tell you they do?

Im not normally on the side of landlords as generally BTLers are selfish individuals motivated by greed but I dont see the problem in this case

never mind, you have the right to quiet enjoyment of your property, so you can tell any potential buyers wishing to view to p1ss off! :)
"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.

the owners knew it was short term as we had to relocate 150 miles with work and buy property in 2 weeks, which is pretty much impossible when you know nothing about the area.im not one for bickering, but i am paying their mortgage and they expect us to show potential buyers round THEIR house in my SPARE time.or if we wont do, leave the house so they can show buyers around.what do i get out of it?all they had to do was to let us know.

You don't have to do anything.

You seem pretty clued up & I think you would do same in Landlord's position.
If you tell tenant early, tenant leaves & Landlord has no tenant & no money comin in.

    Money, money, money.

I'm in a similar position except that I dont even move into the rented place for another couple of weeks. Its a 6 month assured shorthold tenacy. Presumably I cannot be required to leave the property for those six months even if the owner does find a buyer? I'm new to this renting lark!

Think you're pretty safe, might be worth reposting this under it's own thread though & see what replies you get.

If you've got a 6 month AST, you shoud be secure. The landlord will probably serve a section 21 notice after 4 months to inform you to leave after the tenancy ends at 6 months. Nothing to stop the landlord selling the place with you as the tenant in situ.

When I was buying I viewed a place that had tenants in (they were about to move out as they'd bought somewhere themselves) and the tenants showed us round. They were *very* useful on the good and bad points of the house, and also told me a lot about the local area which I wouldn't have found out until after moving otherwise. So, even if the landlord runs the risk of the tenant moving out early and losing out on rent, it's surely in his/her interests to keep the tenant informed about the situation, or else keeping the tenants and house viewers apart from each other!
