Am I classed as unemployed?

I've seen "Carer- non professional" - does that not cover it?
I have witnessed it once, when I asked for it to be added to my car/home/contents insurance, when I was doing voluntary work and I needed a business car insurance even tho' I was not being paid !!!Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0 -
Some posters above are spot on the ball in terms of the right wording, whether insurance companies etc, offer the option or understand/use the term in the same way is a different matter.
Unemployed - means non working but looking for work (as per the government's use of the term for statistics/figures).
Non employed - means not working, but not actively seeking work (the part of the population not counted by the government as above).A waist is a terrible thing to mind.0 -
...and have never claimed any kind of benefit, or tried to get another job. I always tick the Homemaker box on these forms and have never been turned down for any kind of financial product or service.
hth
Same here. I always tick Homemaker or Other, sometimes even Retired, depending on what it is I'm filling in. Never had any problems being accepted for things.
I definitely wouldn't tick Unemployed, because it sounds like you're living on benefits.Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.0 -
You have no Employer. You are not your own Employer. Therefore you are Unemployed - in my opinion.
Un (non/not) Employed.
People on benefits who cannot work due to illness etc are still classed as Unemployed aren't they? Thank you to everyone!

No, they are not classed as Unemployed. As stated before, the official classification of being Unemployed is that you are registered as unemployed (not necessarily receiving JSA), actively seeking work and able to take it up if offered.0 -
3 types...
Economically Active... employed, self-employed etc.
Unemployed... doesn't have a job, but is actively seeking work
Economically Inactive.... retired, students, not wanting a job etc.
How it works:
1) If you have done over one hour of work in a week, are self-employed or on an employment programme (Work Programme etc.) you are Economically Active
2) If you do not have a job, and not in education or training, and you are looking for work each week, you are unemployed
3) If you do not have a job, and you are in education or training, or you aren't looking for work, you are Economically Inactive
You will hear the phrase "Claimant Count"... that is how many people are registered with DWP to claim JSA.
You do not have to claim JSA to be Unemployed. Some JSA claimants are not unemployed - they just have to undertake job search as a condition to continue claiming. You can claim JSA and work for up to 15 hours a week (under 16 hours per week)... in this case, as you are working over an hour per week you are classified as Economically Active (not unemployed, regardless that you must still seek work to claim JSA). Furthermore, you also fit in that category if on the Work Programme whilst claiming JSA.
So you don't have to claim benefits to be unemployed, and just because you claim benefit doesn't necessarily make you unemployed.
I cannot answer your question OP - unless you answer this: Do you actively seek work?
If you say Yes, you are unemployed... If you say No, you are economically inactive.
You could try to develop yourself fancy titles or reasons, such as "in between jobs" etc. This said, what you are classified as and what you can put on a form are two different things entirely.0 -
Those on disability/illness benefits are Economically Inactive up until they do an hour (or more) of work. Many claimants are forced on to JSA now where they become unemployed (up until they do any work).xangeleyes wrote: »You have no Employer. You are not your own Employer.
