Quote for installing a new toilet

I posted on the DIY thread last week about part of the flush valve breaking off which prevented the toilet from being flushed. Anyway after a few days of flushing it using a bucket, I got a plumber round to fix it. He said that everything in the cistern needed replacing & it would be 75£.
Wel,l it was installed, the charge went up to £100 which I paid. I then found out that although it made the sound as though it was flushing, it didnt actually do its job. I called the plumber again. He said that the toilet needs replacing. I said OK
I've been really busy & stressed at work & just wanted it fixed. Anyway the plumber provided the toilet & said that it would be £135.
He's installed it & I now got a message on my phone saying that its increased to £185 (no reason gievn as to why). So the cost in total is £285.
Any idea what it should be? How should I go about insisting on the original price?
Usually Im not too bad at stuff like this, but because of all the stress & lack of time....
Thank you

Anyone? Is £185 for a new toilet & installation, removal of old one (+£100 for cistern installation) a fair quote?0

I think you've been taken for a ride.
Ok if you go to B&q you could pay a lot for a new toilet and cistern, but if you look you could get them much cheaper, but if it was only the flush you probably only needed something in the cistern renewing.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

Thanks. How much should it have been?0

Stick to the original agreement. From what you say, you didn't need a new system unless spare parts are impossible to obtain.
£135 to £185 sounds like a quick and easy 50 quid..!Yes, I usually tell it as I see it and respond where I see the need, but never are my comments ment to be taken personally.0 -
Most toilet flushes can be repaired very cheaply.
Did the toilet not flush at all after the repair,or was it a poor flush.
A poor flush could be a badly designed toilet.0 -
Originally the link that connected the flush valve broke so I just went to B&Q and replaced it myself. It worked OK, flush was fine, but the top of the flush valve broke off so there was no way to connect the link. This is when I contacted the plumber to fix it. He said that the whole cistern needed replacing. Once he replaced it, the flush didn't work at all.0

Sounds very strange fitting a new cistern,in the first place.
The plumber sounds incompetent.0 -
The work has been done....and it certainly sounds like he's done his best to make the most he can out of it. Give him what you agreed to and shut the door! If he starts complaining, give your council trading office a ring....and tell him that's what you intend to do.Yes, I usually tell it as I see it and respond where I see the need, but never are my comments ment to be taken personally.0
