I don't think we can underestimate the massive change that's happening in the way people buy things nowadays.... An awful lot of money is being taken out of spending in high street shops and going online instead. Inevitable that more will close in coming years I suspect, and that the amount of retail space will shrink.
online sales novemeber 2011 up 8.9% on 2010
online sales november 2010 up 17.8% on 2009
the trend apppears to be weakening0 -

daddy bear, what is the Christmas market like there? I was up the day all the halets were going up and am tying to decide whether it worth a trip up now they are open...
The markets are pretty good if you want some unusual or unique gifts. Plenty of mulled wine on offer too!!! Problem is that they are very busy at the weekend.0 -

The weak point is the app that lets you scan the prices. If the stores insisted the manufacturers supplied unique scan codes, not available to Amazon, the app would be useless.0 -
MacMickster wrote: »The problem that I see is that shoppers (such as Mrs MacMickster) like to choose products by actually seeing them in stores, and asking for information from a salesman. Once she has chosen the product that she wants, she walks out of the shop and buys it cheaper online from a seller who does not have the overheads of the high street retailer. She doesn't see that eventually there will not be stores with the products or salesmen to help her to make her choice.
Where I work in retail, the store has an online side. The most common phrase from the customer in the shop is - it's alright I can buy it online. This equates to: if I buy it online i get it on credit. It's not cheaper, it just most people have an account and not a store card.MSE Forum's favourite nutter :T0 -
There are 2 shops in the City that sell Loakes Oxford brogues for less than £100. One is just off Watling St near where Bar Calona used to be and the other is in Houndsditch. They cost $600/pr in Sydney!0

Ah, but not having paid £350 for your Christmas tree, you are well able to afford decent shoes.
I guess it's a matter of priorities. Chavs will always skip the essentials to spend conspicuously on bling.
A case of chav and chav-not, if ever I saw one!

I've been reliably informed that I do need to go to the shops and purchase a tree today. So I guess there is still something you CAN'T buy on the internet.0
