My mum stood as guarantor on my cousin's car some time ago and he failed to pay. The first thing she knew about it was when she got court papers taking them both to court for non-payment.
Fortunately I was able to pick up a couple of holes in the procedures of the loan company and they took the car back and recovered the balance of the money from my cousin. Otherwise, she would have been liable for the difference between the amount achieved at sale and the balance of the loan.
I would really advise anyone not to stand as guarantor unless they are prepared to meet the payments themselves if the worst comes to the worst.0 -
