Well unfortunately a fruitless exercise...... fridge def not working:( have turned the dial up to the coldest setting and it's 12 deg on the bottom shelf and 15 deg on the top:eek: and no motor's running.

Stuff in freezer seems OK so I've put what I can into the outside freezer - unfortunately both were pretty full so I've had to prioritise the "expensive" stuff (whole chickens, blocks of mince, HM ready meals etc) over bread and some veg:( (Hope Squeaky doesn't read this:eek:).

Stuff from fridge is now in the garage and hoping it'll be OK in there (certainly colder than in the fridge atm:() as amongst the stuff in there is 14 cartons of Lactofree milk (just been to stock up - it's very long dated even tho' fresh & was the 9th Jan). At £1.31 each that alone would amount to a fairly big loss:(

Will have to have a hunt around for a replacement tomorrow .... just what I need after 2 mortgage payments (moved provider) and a huge vet bill in November & it being Christmas :(

Sorry for the depressing long post .... needed to get it off my chest .... why does something always come along when you just don't need it.

    Original post below.....

    Help!

I've discovered a crack and hole in my fridge .

It's on the inside but is on the "lip" bit where the door closes against the inside of the fridge (not sure how I've managed to do it - the only thing I can think is if the door's tried to close and I've had the veg box sticking out when I've been filling it).

I've stuck a bit of duck tape over the crack/hole ..... will this be OK? (Not sure if it will affect how the fridge works / if the food will be kept cold enough).

Although getting on a bit the fridge/freezer work fine and I don't really want to have to fork out for a new one because of a wee hole!

    TIA:o

    Oh no, Rising :(

Don't know what to say other than sorry to hear that and hope you manage to find a cheap one soon...

    Have you tried freecycle? xx

  • Definatly try Freecycle/Freegle. Check local second hand stores, we have a Dorothy House Foundation charity shop that does furniture and refurbished electrical items. Look in the local paper/newsagents for anyone getting rid of an old one cheaply, similarly check on EBay for pickups in your local area. Hopefully you can pick a cheap one up to tide you over.

Check your house insurance to see if you are covered for the damage. Could possibly come under accidental damage??

  • Thanks Tiger ... TBH I wouldn't really want to go down the insurance route as I had a storm damage claim last year and don't want to end up with huge premiums / unable to get cover.

I'll have a look at the classifieds just now - thanks - I'd totally forgotten about them!

I'm sure you've checked this but is the light coming on? ie is the thing plugged in? Could it be the fuse? It shouldn't be the result of having a hole/crack.

You did say the fridge was getting on a bit - maybe that's why the plastic cracked, it does when it gets old, and the unit has now died because it's old.

How well do you get on with your neighbours - they may have room in their fridges/freezers. My mum used to keep milk in washing up bowls of cold water in this sort of situation - might work on your cartons of milk.

PS don't tell Squeaky but I have been known to refreeze defrosted bread and veg and am still here to tell the tale :D I wouldn't refreeze animal products unless I'd cooked them though

  • Imogen thanks, also hadn't thought of Gumtree (which shows how stressed I am as I get stuff off there all the time:o). Would need to think about how to get it home first (tiny car) but will ponder that overnight;)

TBH it hasn't felt that cold for around a week or so :o and I was trying to figure out why yesterday when I found the hole and hoped that was the problem .....

My lips are sealed ;).... just promise not to tell him that I had to throw some bread/veg out :shhh::shhh:

Thanks for the suggestions everyone .... will have a proper look tomorrow as I'm beat and must head off to bed or I'll never get up in the morning.:)

  • Is there any value in having someone out to look and see if it can be repaired?
I have one of those big American style fridge freezers - it had been freezing in the back of the fridge for months. Then one day I came home from work to find the temperature of the fridge at 11 degrees. Tried to defrost it - no luck. Next day got home from work to find temperature of freezer at 5 degrees. Devastated. PArticularly as it was a Tuesday and I couldn't be home for a repairman till Saturday. I was convinced we'd be looking for a new fridge. It needed to be almost rebuilt but he did it for £120. Which I know I could have gotten a new fridge for, but not a new one like we had.
It might be worth a look - lots of repair people will do a no obligation diagnosis for you.
I threw 6 binbags of food out over that week. It was awful and made me realise how wasteful I was being.
