Well unfortunately a fruitless exercise...... fridge def not working:( have turned the dial up to the coldest setting and it's 12 deg on the bottom shelf and 15 deg on the top:eek: and no motor's running.
Stuff in freezer seems OK so I've put what I can into the outside freezer - unfortunately both were pretty full so I've had to prioritise the "expensive" stuff (whole chickens, blocks of mince, HM ready meals etc) over bread and some veg:( (Hope Squeaky doesn't read this:eek:).
Stuff from fridge is now in the garage and hoping it'll be OK in there (certainly colder than in the fridge atm:() as amongst the stuff in there is 14 cartons of Lactofree milk (just been to stock up - it's very long dated even tho' fresh & was the 9th Jan). At £1.31 each that alone would amount to a fairly big loss:(
Will have to have a hunt around for a replacement tomorrow .... just what I need after 2 mortgage payments (moved provider) and a huge vet bill in November & it being Christmas
Sorry for the depressing long post .... needed to get it off my chest .... why does something always come along when you just don't need it.
Original post below.....
Help!
I've discovered a crack and hole in my fridge .
It's on the inside but is on the "lip" bit where the door closes against the inside of the fridge (not sure how I've managed to do it - the only thing I can think is if the door's tried to close and I've had the veg box sticking out when I've been filling it).
I've stuck a bit of duck tape over the crack/hole ..... will this be OK? (Not sure if it will affect how the fridge works / if the food will be kept cold enough).
Although getting on a bit the fridge/freezer work fine and I don't really want to have to fork out for a new one because of a wee hole!
TIA:o

I had one with a crack in the liner for years to be honest, and it was fine. If you are unsure, get a fridge thermometer to monitor the temperature. They aren't expensive, and it is probably sensible to monitor the temp on any fridge.0

If the compressor motor isn't running all the time, then it should be getting cold enough. But you might want to start to save for a newer more energy efficient model. :money:"We could say the government spends like drunken sailors, but that would be unfair to drunken sailors, because the sailors are spending their own money."

Hi, do you mean the sort of spongy bit that seals the fridge/freezer door? If so we've had a split in the freezer bit for years and ours works fine.
We have an alarm on the front (built in) if the temperature is amiss, and that never goes off. Also I have a thermometer in the fridge and every now and again I check the freezer and it always goes straight down to -18
Buy a thermometer, as said they are not much and will give piece of mind.

My first thought was also 'get a thermometer'. We have a digital one for cooking, have also used it to check the temperature of the fridge.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0

Thanks all ..... nope it's not the spongey bit on the door unfortunately - it's the plastic bit inside the fridge.
The compressor isn't running all the time so hopefully it's OK for a while.
I will start to put some money aside for a new one - have been thinking I should start doing that anyway as it is several years old now but just not had the funds to do it as yet.
Funnily enough, I'm just back from Mr Ts and did buy a very cheap thermometer there - have no idea if it will be any good (I think it was only a £ in their "handy to have" section) but will stick it in and see if it'll do.
Fingers crossed......Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

Can you feel cold leaking out from the hole or does the door seal cover it? Good idea to get the thermometer and just keep an eye on it whilst saving for another

It will work fine - I doubt that fridges are airtight, for example mine has a drain at the back that is basically a hole that lets excess moisture out into a drip tray where it evaporates - ie I've got a hole in my fridge. The worse that might happen is that your fridge may have to work a bit harder to keep things cool and if you have taped over the hole even that is unlikely. Might be worth trying to work out how it got made in the first place though."Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0

I think I know what you mean.....we had a fridge with a hole in it for ages, and we still live
We didn't even have the wherewithal to duct tape it at the time :S 0 -
I had a fridge with a crack in the white plastic at the bottom for ages. About two years actually - we only replaced it when we ripped the kitchen apart and made room for a bigger one. It worked fine and the temperature was still adjustable. I lived....0

Phew! Hopefully it'll be OK for a while then:D
I'm maybe a bit extra paranoid as I've got Crohn's and the slightest thing sets my tummy off ......
I think it was affecting the seal as the past few days the door seemed to open very easily (more like a cupboard door than the tightness of a usual fridge door) and the fridge did feel on a bit warmer inside.
However, now I've stuck the duck tape on, it seems to be sealing better and def feels a lot colder in there now.:D
Will have to add another savings pot I think!
The holiday sometimes creeps to near the top of the list but quickly gets pushed back to the bottom by other things - a shed is high on the list at the moment (so I have somewhere to put tool / planters for my veg etc) and has recently been joined by a folding butterfly table (so I have somewhere to use my sewing machine) ....... *sigh*:)Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
