New House Build - Delays

I exchanged contracts on a new build house last summer and was advised that it would be ready in this month.
After contacting the housebuiler they advised it will now be June as they haven't built the house in accordance with planning consent. They now have to wait for the next planning meeting and get retrospective planning.
Legally, as they have not contracted for the house to be ready by a certain date they are not in any breach of contract.
Does anyone have any experience of dealing with large housebuilders and have any recommendations of what they could do in the way of compensation.

Plenty of experience, but I'm afraid I can't offer much constructive. Basically, they have you over a barrel : the normal contractual situation is that you have to take possession within "x" days of build completion, butthere's no contractual commitment to when that will be. Further, short of the property being structurally unsound, there's not much you can do to reject it either.
Would suggest all you can do is make an absolute pain of yourself by badgering both the local sales office and the hq of the builder. However, there's a trade-off on that; put too much pressure on them and you will get possession of a house, just one that's got even more snags....
Contractually there's not too much you can do - best you can do is appeal to their better nature (if they have one) to see if you can get any freebies thrown in to compensate.I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0
