Until this week it was fine:huh: surely something must have changed?

Your washer needs a vent when pumping out - otherwise the next lot of water in can just syphon out behind the last discharge. Which is why a stand pipe works best - as air is admitted between the stand / waste pipe.

In your configuration the air vent comes from the half sink above it - as the washer inlet is above the trap. You haven't been leaving the plug in the half sink recently? And thereby closing the vent and - in turn - increasing the velocity of the water slightly.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

    Thanks everyone!

Had a look at the outside pipe as suggested, it was slightly (but not extremely) gross so I cleaned it out and also flushed a load of soda crystals down both sinks with hot water.

Discussed with OH, he thinks it could have been when he did the cleaning up after Sunday roast last weekend - he rinsed out all the roasting tins etc and could have left a load of fat in the pipes.

I have run the washing machine once and the dishwasher stayed empty!

It is still a waste pipe system fitted by Bodgit & Scarper that should be rectified!
