Yes you're right I got it wrong, VOSA not DVLA ... but whoever it is they can know someone's been MOT'less. If a person doesn't have the integrity to ensure their car is MOT'd then maybe the possibility of legal aggro might encourage them.

I understand what you are saying and I agree with your point if someone is deliberately driving without an MOT, but not everyone without an MOT will be using their car on the road so I am not sure how you would legislate this.

My car failed a few years ago and the garage kept it to do the work before issuing the MOT. My car was MOT less for three days but was not taken out on the public road (as far as I am aware and certainly not by me) in that time.
  • As I already stated here is a quote from an MOT site.

'HOW FAR CAN I DRIVE TO THE TEST STATION
I am aware that a car that does not have a current MOT Certificate is not allowed to be used on the road except when going for repairs for a test, or to a prearranged test. Is there a milage limit as to how far a car can be driven without an MOT if it is going to a test centre - ie can one drive 40miles in the car if it to be to an MOT appointment with a garage?
No there is no mileage limit. - MOTT'

I hope this helps. I don't think that you are being irresponsible because you are asking the question. This is what the law states at the current time.
Food and Smellies Shop target £50 pw - managed average of £49 per week in 2013 down to £38.90 per week in 2016

Yes, I may be getting the wrong end of the stick here . My beef is if someone is driving illegally without an MOT and therefore no insurance. If the car is off the road till it can be driven legally (and therefore insured) to its MOT - no problem. If that is what Mr Ben is saying, then my apologies Mr Ben.

  • If this 'relative convenience' means it fits in around work times, then I assume you will be using the car when it is not MOT'd to get to and from work? This would be the issue most people would have with this. However, if it is sitting on your driveway for the three days, then driven straight to the garage then I don't see a problem with it :)

Well no, I don't think that was what Mr. Ben was saying at all and your posts in that regard are well founded I believe.

I think what Mr Ben is saying is he could book his car in on any day between now and the 5th but that would be an inconvenience to his social and work life. Now because he doesn't want to make alterations to his plans to comply with the law, he would like to know if it's acceptable for him to flout the law for a couple of days until he can find time in his hectic diary to fit in an MOT.

Now if Mr Ben intended on driving his car knowing there was no MOT then Mr Ben deserves to be reprimanded. However if he intends to let it sit on his drive and use public transport then fine.

To be fair, if the car is THAT important, it SHOULD take priority over everything else. Rules is rules.

I am basically out of the country until the 7th. It would be possible to get it done before then but it would involve someone other than myself driving the vehicle in which they are not insured to drive. It would also cause great inconvenience to that person (they would have to get a taxi to work then back to the garage, etc..) I am not one to put my problems on others (unless they're from the internet :D )

It's not bureaucracy Mr Ben, it's humanity. If you or someone you love are unlucky enough one day to be the victim of someone driving without insurance you may understand.

It's insured it just won't be MOT'd. Forget your if someone is driving without an MOT they are therefore not insured argument for the moment :D

I am no motor expert, but I know enough about my car to know it is in absolutely fine condition. The car is only 3 years old too. The victims here are us peons forced to pay unnecessary inflated fees to corrupt garages. Don't get me started on fuel duty, road tax, stealth tax. I hardly even use my car! :D
  • I wonder if Mr Ben will get an apology from those sanctimonious do gooders who just love wading in with their holier than thou clap trap before they know all the facts.
