Holidaylettings

Hi all,

Sorry to bother you but needed some advice. I always do the package holiday through someone like Thomas cook etc but this year decided I wanted a private villa and pool and this was rather costly with them.

Came across Holidaylettings where you rent directly from the owner. I have found what I wanted and confirmed with the owner etc now when it comes to payment they want to be paid by bank transfer or PayPal ( I have no problem with this) all I wanted to know is what kind of protection I have should anything go wrong ( for example owners decide they can't accommodate me etc)

Hate to be so negative I just want to make sure I know all the risks (if there are any) before I pay for the villa

Kind regards

Steph

I'm not sure, but i'd say go to tripadvisor and do some reviews, as i know there are a few dodgy apts being let out as villas in tenerife.
  • I've rented various villas and apartments via holiday lettings over the years and not had any bad experiences yet, did your villa have previous guest comments? Otherwise like the poster above, check tripadvisor :)

As far as I am aware you have no protection whatsoever, all you can do is check them out as above. Even if you pay your Paypal bill with a credit card then you cannot claim your credit card as they have paid Paypal not the owner. Perhaps you can ask Paypal if they have any protection.

have a look at flight prices before you commit - you may save a lot of money by going a couple of days earlier or later.

We are looking to rent an apartment on the Algarve for 5 days in July. We found the place on the holidaylettings.co.uk website.

The booking is through a property manager. We wanted to pay with a credit card so that we had some protection but the property manager doesn't have credit card facilities and has asked that the cash is transferred into her UK account.

That we are using a UK account rather than a foreign one does provide some comfort as we likely have a beter chance of recovering the cash in the event of fraud but it is still not ideal.

The cost of the apartment is only £360 for 5 days (£180 each) so I'm content to take the risk but would appreciate it if anyone had any advice/recommendations?

    Many thanks

Ask the owner/agent if the property is also listed on holiday-rentals.co.uk as many are. They give a renters guarantee if there is a problem with the property being a scam etc. Details are on their homepage.
