First Bill in 5 years!

I had my meters (gas and Elec) Swapped so I could pay quarterly. The gas bills arrived no problem but the electric bills never appeared. I phoned back and forward for 2 years and on my last call was told that they were aware of the situation and it would be sorted out. I've recieved my bill from 29th April 2007 with estimated readings right through till they have an actual reading on 1st November 2011. The meter has been read regularly throughout this time, but they are not on the bill. I kept the engineers card when he installed the meter and it was actually installed on 30th Nov 2006.
They have reduced the bill a bit and are now in process of getting me the info on how they worked it out. What are my rights here? And how should I work out what I should pay? I heard that I only have to pay for last 12 months but they have obviously lost all the readings so how do I know how much I have used?

Hi jojack, I think it is daft you have let the electric bill go unpaid for 5 years and now believe you do not have to pay what you owe.
I hope you put to one side the bill money? or do you think all the other customers that pay up should pay your bill too?
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)

It depends on who your supplier is. If they have signed up to an agreement which is called backbilling code iirc, you only have to pay the last year.
  • jojack your first post by the look of it, pity the first answer came from good advise, uh. They never refused to pay only asked what the position is. good advise, no just you trying to be clever. Read the following answer by bengasman that was of use.

It appears the utility company are at fault not the poster.

JoJack did well to try to get it sorted for two years, quote " I phoned back and forward for 2 years and on my last call was told that they were aware of the situation and it would be sorted out."

And "I've recieved my bill from 29th April 2007 with estimated readings right through till they have an actual reading on 1st November 2011. The meter has been read regularly throughout this time, but they are not on the bill.
In circumstances like this, if the company can't be bothered why should the customer ?

After two years getting nowhere what would you do ?

or do you think all the other customers that pay up should pay your bill too

No the incompetents in the companies accounts department should be made to pay, or deduct it from managers bonuses. ;) :rotfl: :j

Who is your supplier? If it's one with a representative here you will get some help from them. If it isn't, others may know more about how to go.
