Economy 7 to Economy 10
Hi, does anyone have economy 10 with storage heaters.
As I am looking to change to eco 10, because I feel that eco 7 is a waste of money. I don't want the heating on all night wasting heat and electric no matter how cheap. So I have been looking around,as the storage heaters come on about 23.30pm and go off at 6.30am.
I have done some reading and I think eco 10 would suit me better, as this has 3 phase, 5 hours at night, 3 in the afternoon and 2 at night. I am really interested in the afternoon time because that would suit the time i'm at home. Heating up between 14.30pm to 17.30pm and I would have enough heat for the night period upto 23.00 or 24.00 and obviously still have the option if need be for all night at 5 hours.
My supplier at present is southern elecric, and I have contacted them and they told me eco 10 is just for wet water systems, is this true. And that they do not provide it. Is there any other supplier that can supply this for me. And if so does any one know the cost per unit day rate and off peak night rate KWH. and is the afternoon time and evining time off peak or discounted half price electric.
Thanks in advance for all answers. kevin

Welcome to the forum.
I think you will have great difficulty in getting any supplier to supply you with Economy 10.
Who will pay to fit the meters?
There are plenty of houses with E10 in Scotland and the majority are for storage heaters.
If their accounting systems are not set up for E10, they won't be interested.0 -

Cardew has answered your question. It just isn't the answer that you would have preferred.
A quick Google shows that EDF and Eon may offer these tariffs (this info maybe out of date), but they won't appear on comp sites-you'll have to phone.

You will have to pay for the meter change, as Cardew stated. No free lunch, and no free laptop

The amount of "waste" is also a function of how well insulated your home is.
Really? Economy 10 *may* have a comfort advantage but at a real cost and a "hidden cost" which is the difficulty (you have already found) in comparing cost and switching. But an "easy choice" for you if heating cost doesn't matter. In that case also look for other "comfort tariffs" such as "Heatwise".... no matter how cheap.
Surely that's just, by your yardstick, 5 hours of "wasting heat and electric". But it may well suit at a cost premium only you can decide is worth it.I have done some reading and I think eco 10 would suit me better, as this has ... 5 hours at night...
Modern storage heaters on Economy 7 in a well insulated house may not be entirely satisfactory come evening but with serviceable and correctly set controls are quite satisfactory mid-afternoon.I am really interested in the afternoon time because that would suit the time i'm at home.0 -

It's meaningless to say you want e10 instead of e7 if you don't know the prices charged for both. Everyone on e7 would like an afternoon boost - obviously, effectively making e7 very much like e10. The problem is, the few daytime hour boost costs the supplier much more than overnight electricity. Wholesale prices vary by the half hour all through the day and night. Costs virtually nothing during the night, but much higher for all daytime periods, and substantially higher during the morning, and especially, the afternoon peak. Consequently, e10 tariffs are much more expensive than e7 tariffs - when I looked a year ago, it would have cost me much more on the e10 tariffs I saw (and even then, I don't think a supplier would supply me with e10 in my area).
So, please post the times and prices of peak and offpeak e10, and your current e7 prices, when/if you find them.
It's quite strange that the most environmental thing the average bod can do is to go on e7, thus shifting the demand curve and overall making electricity 'greener' and cheaper. But it isn't sexy, and it's probably a difficult fact for government/greens to grasp. In a truly sensible environmental world, off peak prices would be zero - a self financing move which would encourage more e7 uptake. A further move to promote e7 would be to have a cheap rate (rather than free) afternoon boost, during the cheaper daytime wholsale periods (say between 13:30 to 15:00), to ensure even old storage heaters provide suitable heating well into the evening.0 -

Free! Yes please, then I can get an electric car with no fuel cost!
What about two for the price of one?
You pay 12p per kWh, any time, but for every PAID night unit, you get a FREE day unit. Obviously, you can adjust the reward ratio, like pay for two night units, get one free.
Marketing slogan: "Rewards while you sleep."0
