Paying for Flights with Credit Card or Debit

All,

I am booking some round the world flights costing £2600 for 2 flights in total.

Is there any additional protection gained by paying on a credit card, as the agents charge 2% for booking with a credit card?

Would I get the same cover if I paid the £85 per ticket depoist by credit card, and the rest of the money by debit card?

Thanks

Ram

  • Just done this! Used a debit card - no fee. Not sure of any additional protection from a CC company. Give them a call

    Make sure agent is bonded.

I think the added advantage of paying by CC (other by a little interest gained because you'd be paying for it later) is simply that if there is some issue at a later date, your CC company might help you by not authorising the transaction... I don't know. With a DD, the money's long since gone from your account.

With something that price, even if it is with a reputable travel company, I'd use a credit card every time.

If there are problems later you can tell the card issuer to cancel that transaction, then it's up to them to deal with it.

I don't know if paying the deposit gives you the same protection, but I always pay by CC now. A few years ago I booked flights with a tour operator who went bust. I paid with a Sainsburys CC, I rang them and told them what had happened, they refunded the whole amount (inc the CC fee!) straight to my card, no arguments. My friend booked with a debit card and had to get her money back through ABTA, it took months and months. In the meantime we both had to rebook new tickets and she was left having to cover the interest payments until the refund came through.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

One thing to check for is if any of your CCs allow you to book without paying the CC fee.

For example if you have an Egg Card you can book holidays over the phone with Thomas Cook
