Suspending car insurance- is it possible?

My sons car is off the road at the moment as it needs work doing on it. He isnt able to get the work done as he is out of work at the moment and having a course of chemotherapy so he is only getting sick pay.

His monthly insurance payments are taking two thirds of his benefit and as he cant use the car at the moment its dead money.

Does anyone know if its possible to 'suspend' insurance or is he better to cancel it altogether. Someone has told him that if you cancel it is held against you when to try to re-insure.
Is that true?

We can all pontificate on here but your best bet is to speak to his insurer.

The biggest problem wil be the finance element of paying monthly might make it uneconomic to cancel.

But talk to them and explain the problem.
  • Do you have somewhere secure to store an uninsured car?

Just thinking what ifs stolen damaged etc.

Expect a hefty fine from the DVLA if it's taxed and not insured.

^^ +1. You no longer have a choice, you must have continuous insurance cover on any vehilce that's not been SORN'd.

    Is that true?

This is true if the insurer cancels the cover (due to non payment, false disclosure or fraudulent behaviour for example) but cancelling it yourself, within the terms, is usually not an issue - other than that he won't accrue any NCB for this year by cancelling the cover early.

To add to my previous post, you can insure a car for zero mileage/storage. I believe this cover is very cheap......

You still have to insure it or declare it off-road.

Only if it hasn't been SORN'ed.

That's why he said "IF it's taxed". Try and keep up. ;)
