Its been on every insurance policy I've had for some time now. It was when I was with Swiftcover and is with Chaucer.

You've been unlucky I've never had a policy stating that.

can you quote a source for that please? I have *never* found this in any of my policies, I believe it is a commonly-held misconception. The point to watch is that the car can only be covered by someone else's 'any other vehicle' clause while actually being driven or sat in, on a public road. When empty it HAS to be on a private drive etc.

It is on a few polices now. Not many, most don't require any other insurance.
The requirement for other insurance is so that the cheap and cheerful company you're with can pursue the car owners insurance, as they are still liable for third party damage, (even if the driver stole the car, so long as they can be identified)
Moral is don't lend your car to someone whose policy requires this.

Okay, thanks for the help thus far. I have, however, encountered yet another stumbling block.

I was originally quoted insurance for about £280 so was going to go ahead with this, I can just about afford to have that taken out my account so long as I get it back after the 14 days.

However, I was going over it with the insurance company and they told me that because I have insurance in my name on our main car, I am unable to use my 13 years no claims bonus against this car as well. Hence, the price goes up to £600 and I am classed as having no no-claims and as such, viewed as a new driver. Is this right?????? I cannot afford to have £600 taken out my account. Jeeeeesss, it is turning into a nightmare and may well be cheaper to just give the car away. I cannot believe it is being made this difficult when all I am trying to do is make the car better for whoever buys it.

OP, was this car insured in your oh's name before he got the company car? if so why not get a quote in his name using his ncd (assuming that they cant be used on a company car);)

Your easiest solution would be to get a local garage to collect and mot the car and then advertise it on ebay, let the buyer worry about the tax, you wont be the only seller with this problem.
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.
  • Thanks for you help all.

OHs NCD is being used on his company car so cannot do that either.

I have looked into all temporary car insurance and cannot find one for less than £250 per month.

I think I am going to have to break some rules and get the car insured to drive to the garage (it is still taxed until the end of December and the MOT/brakes and fog light fix is being done next week). I will then tax it and cancel the insurance and sell and hope and pray that I can get rid of it before I get into any trouble (it has been uninsured for months now and taxed at the same time). I don't think it is the sort of car which will sell on ebay either, it is not a desirable car.

So frustrating that I am trying to do the decent thing and sell a car with no faults but get scuppered for doing so. Being a decent person definitely does you no favours. :(
  • I was about to advise the same thing. Go to Admiral.com buy the cheapest insurance you can, add on a few elder female drivers to bring down the price, call up and request to pay monthly. Now, if you finish and sell up within 14 days, you will only be charged £15 for cancelation fee + a refund on the unused days. (BUT if you go over 14 days, it's £60 to cancel!)

So for example if you get quoted £50 a month, you use it for 13 days and cancel the insurance. They charge you £15 admin fee + £1.61 a day (£50 devided by 31) = £36 for 2 weeks use!

I hope this helped a little.
  • I have heard of a place that offers 1 day insurance
    £36 for 2 weeks use!

It was more then that though, sounds a good tip
