What's the best way to get soot out of a cream carpet?

We have a coal fire but it's in a room we don't use all the time so it's not always lit. It's not been lit for a few days, but with all the hail stones we've had recently, some have come down the chimney, covered in soot and now we've got loads of lovely spotty black speckles on the cream carpet.

Any idea's how I we can get it out without ending up with a soggy black mess?

I know this is probably going to be impossible and we'll end up getting a rug to cover it up, but you never know. There are some really clever people out there so there may be an answer.

I'll make sure the fireguard is always there in future!

Sprinkle dry baking powder/soda on soot stains and leave for an hour, then hoover with hose attachment. Using a clean white dry cloth, dab or blot with dry cleaning fluid available from many superstores. Good luck
  • Thanks for that Anne - I'll give it a go. I think it may be a good idea to get the chimney swept as well. It's not been done for a while.

Glad to be of help, Shackalak. Good idea to get chimney swept once a year anyway and many people do not know that you should also get a gas fire chimney swept too, although not quite as frequently.
My Mum always tells the story of coming back from church as a child with my grandmother. The fire engines were hurtling along with sirens wailing and my gran was saying how awful for the people concerned. It turned out to be the chimney of their house!
  • Hire a carpet cleaner machine, should remove the marks. Although with a cream carpet it would be well worth buying one. Vax etc. starting at around £100.
