Nationwide account number too long

Trying to pay some money to my nephew as a surprise and have taken the account number from his Nationwide savings book. It has 1234/123456789 format and the a sort code (07-00-93).
The account number is too long for my bank to recognise. Does anyone know how I shorten this to fit the standard 8 digit requirement? Or is it a case of using a completely different code.
Thanks

at the front of his account book, there should be sort code, account number and then a reference number. These should be printed into his book. The long number is his reference number.cross stitch cafe #90 UFO's 6 to finish in 2013, and loads of new kits to boot

it looks like you need to pay into account 33333334 and give the actual account number as the payment reference.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

The first 4 digits before the / are the branch number. I never use this when I need my account number and only use the last 8 digits and the sort code.0
