Npower 80% rise in DD so feel like canceling it!

Hi all.
Am an Npower SOL20 customer that is now in the throes of changing to Edf. The change should be complete very early in the new year. Had my bill from Npower today and they want to raise my DD from £59 to £96 a month.
Immediately spoke to them on the phone and they would only drop this to £76. Bear in mind that I am still £66 in CREDIT with Npower so I feel this is simply taking the mickey.
Here's my thoughts. I am in credit to the tune of £66 and leaving NP in the next month to go to EDF on a fixed rate deal. I am sure that £66 will cover the next month give or take a few £ which if its over they can bill me for and I will pay immediately. So I want to cancel the DD now just to make sure these bunch of thieves don't get any more of my hard earned and hold on to it before paying me back.

Bearing in mind they are shifting me onto their normal "we'll screw you for every penny we can" tarriff for the final few days and my DD. Should I / Can I cancel the DD now and wait for a final bill?

You can tell your bank to cancel the direct debit anytime you want to do so.

As to should you, if you're in credit, on a standard tarrif with no enefit to paying by DD & leaving them anyway, why not?

I know it's infuriating but be careful. If you cancel the DD they may claim they are entitled to remove the discount you (probaby) get for paying that way. Also the transfer also may take longer than you think.
Oh and welcome to the wonderful world of EDF (be afraid....)
