We moved house, O2 lost our phone number!

I was wondering whether this is a common problem, or whether's have had experience fighting this lazy administrative error.

We recently moved house. O2 provided our home phone and broadband at the old address, and we wanted to continue with them. We requested a move, and everything was handled although with an annoying two week gap in service before the new property was re-connected.

However, when we were reconnected, we were assigned a new phone number. When I called to rectify this, the agent told me that the old phone number was almost certainly now lost and could never be reclaimed :(

That means some £££ now have to be spent reprinting business cards and re-contacting everyone after our change of address.

Is the new property on the same exchange/area code?

    I believe so - old number began 0141 433 and new number 0141 423. Can I check?

    Thanks

If you asked to take your number with you it should have been reserved when your old line was stopped.

Thanks. Both properties (3 minutes apart) are served from the same exchange in Pollok. And yes, we requested the number be transferred :(

Should be recoverable, and it will be up to O2 to arrange this with Openreach. Unfortunately, they're may be a reason why your old number cannot be used, but as long as you have proof on the jobsheet that number reprovision was ordered, you should be OK. When you call your original number, is in N/U or ringing out?

Agh. No jobsheet - the move was handled entirely over the phone by calling O2 customer service. I don't think I received anything from them by mail confirming the move (and we have Royal Mail redirection in place, so I know we're getting everything).

I accidentally called the number this morning, in fact. It is out of use, doesn't ring.

    Thankds
