hi there

I did OK last year with my little efforts ( rocket, lambs lettuce, spinach, rasperries) and Id love to get more going on this year.

Weve moved house and are now in rented, so I dont want to disturb things too much, but I guess we could knock up a raised bed. ill be doing lots of stuff in pots I think, & potatoes in a bin.

the issue is in our shaded area, we have a wall, and its shaded by huge trees. we are close to a large forest & these trees i fear will sap the nutrients? Will they?

Id like a greenhouse, but cheapest as poss- any thouhts?
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

  • Hi Lynz

There are often greenhouses advertised locally free/very cheap if you are prepared to dismantle them. Do you have a free adds type paper you could put a wanted advert in perhaps?
  • Lynz - Check out if there is a FREECYCLE scheme near you or friends or family with transport. You may be lucky if someone is offering ideally a greenhouse or even a cold frame.

Friends of the Earth may have a branch near you or friends/family and be a useful source of information.

If you want to start small what about the ones that have a metal frame you fit together and they come with a plastic cover. We started with one of these it was about £15 in poundstretcher, the following year we used our shed and surprised ourselves how well we did, DH put a shelf up under the window so they had plenty of light and we also used some old bedroom shelving around the sides.
