I had no idea that they charged to repair their own equipment.
Even if you rent the phone (why would you?), you are still responsible for the internal wiring and extensions downstream of the master socket, which is not BT's equipment. No free lunch, and no free laptop

BT always maintained there was nothing wrong with our line although callers often said they couldn't hear us clearly, or had a problem getting through. Recently switched to Zen Internet - result - the line is now as clear as a bell

Intersting considering you're still using the same line and exchange equipment. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -

Just had a thought. As part of the change to Zen did you get new filters for your phone sockets?
I had a problem some years ago and a friend suggested changing the filter. I was a bit skeptical but I did have a spare so I tried it and it did fix the problem. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -

I had new filters four years ago when I switched to Zen BB so when I switched from BT to Zen home phone a month ago I didn't need to do anything. The line was a problem before, muffled etc., so mainly only used for BB.0
