I got a letter from nPower the other day pointing out that they haven't been giving me my direct debit discount. As a direct debit customer I was entitled to £100 per year off so they sent me £319 in the post (3 years worth plus interest).
It was a nice surprise especially with Xmas coming. If your energy company has direct debit incentives (I guess most do) then I suggest you check you have received them, maybe you will be entitled to a refund to

Excuse me for being a tad dubious because I always had to twist their arm to pay my discount and I don't believe they have suddenly become Father Christmas

I guess they got audited or something and told to send customers what they were entitled to.
The weird thing was that they sent a letter with a bar code on it. I then took this to the post office and the post office gave me the £319 in cash.
I didnt quite believe it either until I had the cash in my hand and legged it out of the post office.0 -

AFAIK the last time they sent out letters with a bar code was October 2010 when they were forced by Consumer Focus to refund £70 million to customers they overcharged during 2007-08.
The reason this time could be an audit as you suggest
