DH's best friend started to get a bit cheeky last week, we were talking about going out for dinner together as a 4 and he asked me whether I needed to consult my spreadsheet first! This coming from someone who lives month to month and can barely afford to feed himself and his family in the run up to pay day....
I didn't get in to a conversation about it, just smiled sweetly and had a few thoughts to myself.
I bet you did though!!!0 -

I've joined the bandwagon too. I'm a first time buyer and paid 5 months mortgage with no overpayment just while i got my finances in order, saved for a £2k holiday and developed a house emergency fund of £1k. This changed in November when i started overpaying by £55 a month. I also will have around £1k lump sum which i will throw towards it in Feb when i get my bonus. Just a quick question. Do people transfer mortgage overpayments by means of online banking rather than ringing up? I can spare £10 here and there but i'm sure the customer advisor on the phone won't appreciate me asking to transfer £5 or £10 towards my mortgage every week or so!Mortgage 1: May 2012 £90,000 April 2020: £47,000
Mortgage 2: £270,000😱 Jan 2019 £253,000 April 20200 -
Hi Loosepockets and Southernman - welcome along !
@Southernman - I used to make overpayments but only when I had saved what I'd class a 'substantial amount'. So i'd keep it in a savings account, then when it was £500 or £1000 i'd make my allowed overpayment(s).
I always made the o/p's in a local branch - couldn't do it electronically so just wrote out cheques instead.
Good luck with your journeys0 -
hi and welcome loosepockets!
Fancy setting yourself a target for overpayments next year (however large or small) and joining us over on the 2012 MFW thread? I joined the 2011 MFW thread and found it quite motivating to set a target to aim for, especially when I was beginning to lose focus. You too Southernman! Oh and in answer to your question, I am not allowed to make OPs of less than £500 but if I were I would make small payments from time to time to ensure I couldn't spend it!!0 -
Hi,
I'm also working on paying off the mortgage asap. I want to retire in 2 1/2yrs time and can only do this if the mortgage is at a minimum. My plan for 2012 is for us to live solely off one income (mine, which is the bigger of our two) and save my OH's and our rental income from our two let houses. I need to pay off £25,000 per year which seems a vast amount but I am very careful with money and have been for years. We also need to help pay for our daughter to get through Uni, she will go in Sept 2012 and won't get any grant due to our income. So I am joining this thread and will update my signature month on month which will be a good incentive to stay on track. Good luck to everyone who has the same aim.:beer:Nothing is truly lost until your mum can't find it!0
