Tax Credits

I got a phone call from the tax credit recovery agency today saying that I owed them three thousand pounds from last year!!!, when they call me about this last yeat I immediately call them and they said it was a mistake on their part and it would be cancelled, now I phoned them again and spoke to a Mrs Unhelpful, who said their was no record of it being wiped out, and that it would have been on the system with a note addedd, its done 'automatically' what without the need to press any buttons I doubt if they have voice regcointion, and that I would have to pay the amount well I dont have that amount of money, perhaps they accept a pound a month, I wish I had recorded that phonecall so I would have evidence on my behalf, she wasn't doing anything to investgate this matter, just saying well its not on the system, I was told because I didnt fill in the application form , on time, well I did cos I did it online cos its supposedly easier, they have no record of it, my payments where stopped in oct 05 and resumed a couple of months later in dec, so they did recieve my application, they said they sent a letter regarding the outstanding amount but I didnt recieve it, but if someone owes you x amount of money, your not going to send one letter then leave it dormant for a year, I would be chasing it up constantly. what shall I do now, my mistake was not contacting the inland revue recovering agency after my frist enquiry, but why dont those departments talk to each other.

They take any overpayment out of subsequent payments. I think the most they can recover is 20% per year (not totally sure)
I know, they paid me a few grand too much when it was all new, and me, being a muppet didnt realise and thought I was entitled to it.
NAH.... I am still paying it back now.
