You don't know he bites them. My nails break really easily so it looks like I bite them, but I actually don't. It's a combination of being clumsy, having a manual job, and also having weak nails.

  • I used to date a nailbiter - I used to tell him to stop if he did it round me but in general it didn't bother me. But it's a matter of degree, someone who is tearing their fingers to bleeding stumps and tears off bits of skin is different to someone who just nibbles their nails down a bit too far. the first I don't think I could handle.

On hygiene - surely their hands are cleaner as there are no nails for anything to lurk under. Seeing the state of some mens' filthy nails I'd much prefer a nailbiter.

Is it a weakness? Sure I guess, so are all 'vices'. But I don't believe there's a single one of us alive who doesn't have some funny little personal habit. My ex husband was a nose picker. He also used to spit on his finger and wipe the spit over his eyelids (urk urk urk). There are men who can't stop playing pocket billiards. People who constantly pick at spots. People who fiddle with their hair non-stop, even pull it out, and eat it! I used to work opposite a man who sniffed every 5 seconds. My friend had a boyfriend who had a weird habit of clearing his throat all the time. One of my friends is with a man who scratches himself to bleeding in his sleep (the state of their sheets!). Nail biting isn't that bad. What is it that YOU do?

When I met my OH he was 35 and bit his nails. Some of the nails were almost non existent. I told him I thought it looked awful (tact and diplomacy aren't my strengths) and he stopped - just like that. He does have the odd relapse when he's stressed but at least he has nails now.

So it's not necessarily a showstopper, OP!
