County Parking

Have appealed against a parking ticket at a hospital (am a member of staff), fine now 80 pounds. Was parked in area where staff can park from 0930, was parked at 0918hrs. Am now being threatened with visits from a bailiff. Am very scared, what can I do?
I would appreciate advice as what to do next? Do I pay the full amount or risk bailiffs coming to my house? What rights do I have regarding bailiffs?

  • Read the other threads on this forum, particularly the "stickies". You will then realise you owe no-one anything (assuming this is a Private Parking Company, I don't believe council tickets will be threatening bailiffs so early on). All the talk of CCJs and bailiffs is just there to frighten you into paying. Don't be scared - they are powerless to do anything. Also understand that bailiffs can't just show up and confiscate your goods. The PPC would have to take you to court first (which won't happen), then wil (even less likely) and then you not pay what the court ordered.

Be prepared to receive more threatening letters, with more red ink and bigger letters. ALso read carefully - it will be full of mays and mights when it comes to court action or bailiffs. That's their own get-out, meaning that actually they have no intention of doing so. If you get correspondence from people claiming to be bailiffs or debt collectors, that is just part of the scam, and just as ignorable.

Do not fret, do not worry. It's a scam. Also, don't worry that you have appealed (and, no doubt, failed). There is no real appeal, it's just a sop. It doesn't make you any more culpable, it just means you're likely to get a few more letters - more fodder for the recycling bin.

@cowslip: Don't worry about it, I've worked for two private parking companies, they're powerless unless they can get a clamp on the car (and even then they must be licensed and have clear signage etc). I honestly wouldn't worry about it.
  • Thank you all so much for your prompt replies. I really appreciate it. It was a private parking company (County Parking). I contacted the travel office at the hospital, I was told that I received the ticket because I had parked in a car park for orange and black ticket holders (mine is blue-it means you can park in different areas of the hospital). Members of staff are frequently ticketed.

Indeed, the nurses on the ward I work on have 5 or 6 of these each and have ignored every single one.

It is where there wasn't a pre-existing contract in place. As I understand these have to be honoured but will not be renewed.

Just to add to the above, PPC'S cant come and clamp your car if you refuse to pay the charge.
