Help pc online

Hi, I ve had this company fone me up ( a few times actually) and im wondering have any of you heard of them or have used them. The company is Help Pc Online. They offer to clean up my many errors etc and look after my pc for a one off payment of £99 as my pc is slow etc. Im always wary of giving my card details online etc and im also wondering is this necessary or could i do it myself or indeed get someone local to do it cheaper. Anyone out there got any opinions. Thank you

yep... loads of the threads on here about this.

Basically some Indian bloke calls you and tells you he's from Microsoft and your PC has a virus. Then they try to convince you to install a remote control app so they can check, they'll take you to event viewer and point out red and yellow viruses, which are just errors and warnings whenever your PC does something - but not virus related.
Then they charge you £xx.xx to delete them and tell you that you've been velly velly lucky and your PC is now virus free.

Tell them you're too busy having sex with the dog, and hang up.

as above this is a very well known scam, and if infact you are having problems, check out the sticky thread at the top of the page called
how to speed up a slow or infected computer

which is a very good DIY solution
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

    Software needed!!

    1. advance windows care
    2. windows registered firewall protections
    3. windows registered anti-virus
    4. windows c cleaner

This has got to be one of the biggest scams going.
My IP shows me in Manchester (I think) and I live nowhere near there, that's the IP address for the servers my ISP uses.
Follow the sticky at the top (already mentioned) and give your machine a spring-clean and a good scan at the same time.

Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.

Please don't give these people any money and don't believe anything they tell you.

Windows PCs will slow down over time with use. Windows and the software you installed is controlled by the Registry, this is a database and over time it gets bigger and slower and full of stuff that should have been removed but wasn't.

I used to wipe mine and reload everything once a year.

Most people these days have a hardware firewall built into their router/hub.

If you install Microsoft Security Essentials, it's free and it is a more than competent anti virus program, you should be fine.

If you can't face, or don't feel confident, doing a wipe and rebuild then periodically run the defrag tool. This basically moves the fragmented bits of your files around so they are all together and quicker to access.

Make sure the built in Windows firewall is turned on.

Some people like an additional firewall but for most people they're not necessary. You'll only get sick and tired of being asked if it's OK for this or that to access the internet and unless you really know what you're doing most people don't know what to agree to and what to deny access to.

These people will at best do nothing and at worst hijack your own system and hold you to ransom.

You can install all the security you need for free.

I love these calls. I let them rabbit on for as long as they like then say "That's really clever. You'd think if you were that good you'd know that I'm using an Apple iMac and not Windows."

They usually hang up at this point.
